Don’t Laugh, This is Important
It is not often that one comes across an intellectual description of the lengths some of us socially challenged individuals will go to in the pursuit of making sense out of inconsistent fictional universes. Todd Seavey writes:
If Scotty witnesses Captain Kirks death at the beginning of Star Trek VII, it is extremely troubling to some of usthose who care, those who have intellectual integrity and the discipline of logic!if Scotty is awakened from suspended animation approximately seventy years later in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and asks whether Captain Kirk is still alive. Scotty should know that Kirk isnt! Something is wrong! It doesnt add upyet it must! It must!
These issues are, I think, much more important that any of the political and religious ones that seem to have captured our attention in recent years. How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? It depends. Are we talking about Old Testament angels or the Vorlons as seen by humans in Babylon 5?
This stuff is important.
