Doughnut Day – June 3
Krispy Kreme has announced that June 3rd is Doughnut [sic] Day and I am outraged. Donut Day cannot be limited to just one Friday out of the year. Donut Day is every Friday.
Traditional Donut Day (note the correct spelling) celebrations have been held on Fridays. Not many people remember that Thanksgiving was originally going to be scheduled for a Friday but Congress moved it to Thursday because Friday had already been taken… by Donut Day.
Additionally, I think it is really sad the way the true meaning of Donut Day has been taken over by commercial influences. These days when you ask a kid about Doughnut Day they say things like “gimme a doughnut,” or “are you going to eat that?” or “old people smell funny.” Kids just aren’t taught about traditional Donut values; they aren’t exposed to the rich history of the donut and the crumbs it has left on our national fabric. (Thankfully our national fabric is machine washable.)
Let us take a moment to remember the song we learned in school about the founders of this great country and the donuts (and small pox) they brought with them.
When the Mayflower touched down
in this promised land
First thing that the pilgrims did
was build a donut stand.
Can’t remember the song? You can listen to it here. Because when you’ve got some donuts, you cannot sing it wrong.
Let’s take the “ugh” out of doughnut one bite at a time.
