There’s an interesting if not also short article at the NYT (free subscription required) about a study suggesting owners of DVR (or PVRs or TiVo) watch more television than do people who still watch “live” television.
That finding, which comes from in-home interviews conducted by Mediamark with 26,000 adults between March 2005 and May 2006, seems [...]

Having built a killer Home Theater PC, I needed to install some software with which to view HDTV programs. I selected SnapStream’s Beyond TV 4.3 after much deliberation, not a small amount of research, consultation of sacred chicken entrails and a coin toss. Outside of Voodoo and games of chance, I have found that the [...]

In February of 2009, under Federal Communication Commission (FCC) directive, all terrestrial television broadcasts in the U.S. will be digital. Unless you subscribe to cable or satellite service, your old analog TV will no longer work for over-the-air signals without an external digital television (DTV) tuner after that date. If this sort of news puts [...]

At about 3pm, my weather station said “108 F.” You can cook popcorn on the sidewalk.

High definition video files are large. Not only are they large but they must be processed at with a great deal of speed. An hour of broadcast HD video comes in at about 8.5 GB. Remember when 8.5 Megabytes was a lot of data?
Needless to say my HDTV box will need a large storage space [...]

Thanks in part to a lesson in patience brought to me by UPS (the patience arrived before my packages did), I was forced to delay my PVR building project for a few days. When the parts did finally arrive, I worked non-stop on it for most of the following day. I took some pictures. Occasionally [...]

Okay, so I haven’t posted in a few days. I’ve been busy building my PVR … or DVR or Home Theater PC. I documented nearly everything and will post the pictures very soon now. The reason for the delay is simple: I had to find out whether or not my mad PC building skillz were [...]

A friend of mine (okay, he says he’s a friend of mine when asked in private) has a famous sister whose novel has been accepted for publication. You can read a chapter of it online. The rest of it you must pay for unlike this picture of the book cover that I ripped off [...]

As you might be aware, I’ve got this what turns out to be long-term plan to build an HDTV-capable PVR (personal video recorder) or DVR (digital video recorder), if you prefer that term. The remaining parts of my personal digital recorder of video were supposed to arrive yesterday but it seems UPS has [...]

According to this account at KGW-TV (free subscription or bugmenot required), Lorna Jeanne Dudash of Aloha, Oregon (for you out-of-towners it’s pronounced “ah-LO-ah ORy-gun”) called 911 because she had previously been visited by a “cute” Washington County deputy and wanted to see him again.
“He’s the cutest cop I’ve seen in a long time. I just [...]
