Burns, OR to Baker City, OR via Jordan Valley, OR and, uh, Baker City, OR
See the map.
The JV Cafe (checkpoint #15) in Jordan Valley, OR where they serve “Good Food.” It’s true, the food is great. I rode 120+ miles to eat breakfast there. I woke up “early” and left Burns with the intention of [...]

Never, ever begin a telephone conversation with your spouse or equivalent person of interest this way:
“I hurt myself.”
Moreover, do not begin the conversation that way when you’re out on a multi-day solo motorcycle expedition and when you’re also talking over a sketchy cell connection. Instead, begin with:
“I’m alright.” And then explain that you pulled a [...]

Pendleton, OR to Burns, OR (by way of Mount Vernon, OR and Hines, OR)
The ever-evolving map is here.
There are two kinds of roads: straight roads and curvy roads. Oh, and there’s a third kind of road that has both straight parts and curvy parts. Most roads are some combination of the first, second and third [...]

Moscow, ID to Pendleton, OR.
I’ve been waiting for a while to get on with this summer’s tour and now, finally, the waiting for a while is over and the getting on with this summer’s tour is gettin’ on. Much preparation went into making sure STraddle was road worthy; tires checked, check; fluids checked, check; bug [...]

An 11 year old boy killed a 1,051 lb. wild hog with a .50 caliber revolver. If I saw that thing coming at me, I’d feel compelled to break out the nuclear weapons but, hey, one works with what one has on hand.
…a .50 cal revolver? That kid has strong wrists!

Our town is holding a memorial service today for Moscow police officer Lee Newbill who was killed in the line of duty Sunday morning. Half of the town’s residents are expected to attend in person, as are police officers from all over the state and a few from nearby Pullman, WA. We’re having what has [...]

I think this article by Joan Opyr does a good job of summing up how our newly adopted town is handling the events of Sunday morning. I take some exception to the headline, “Shooting Wreaks Devastation in Moscow, Idaho”; the devastation happened at an individual level but the town itself, I feel, will only grow [...]

[To those who know us personally and might be worried: We're just fine -- as are TT's parents who happen to be visiting us right now.]
Some idiot apparently thought it would be a good idea to shoot into the county courthouse last night.
The shooting began late Saturday and wounded two officers and a civilian, said [...]

No one actually cares what I think about the late Jerry Falwell but this is my blog so I’ll just drop this on the stack with the rest of the stuff no one cares about. In trying to sum up my feelings on Falwell, the best I could manage was a string of obscenities. Timothy [...]

Yesterday morning I took STraddlecaSTer out for a 160 mile round trip to Cour D’Alene — up and down US-95. It wasn’t as much of a sight-seeing adventure as it could have been but I wanted to make sure that all of the goodies I typically take along on these trips (GPS, camera, etc.) were [...]
