Oh, pluheeese
While I’m recouperating at home I’ve been watching the [world games]. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to mention the actual name of the games that are played every four years and that are this year being played in China… but I bet you can guess I’m not talking about WWF Smackdown.
During one of the commercial breaks, we were treated to an advert for MSNBC’s coverage of the presidential election. There’s a lot of completion for Stupidest on TV but I think the MSNBC ad could easily earn silver or gold in the Stupid. The ad uses all of the metaphors from the Olympic Games (there, I said it) and turns them around to suggest that somehow the current presumed presidential candidates are like seasoned athletes competing on the field. I’m trying not to vomit. If ever there was an example of how candidates are sold to us like sports teams, there it is.
“My team is better than your team because…. because… you guys suck! Go, our team! Yay!”
We’re encouraged to “watch this” because, you know, it’s like a big event to which we should bring our “#1″ hands; put on the face paint! Wear the elephant and donkey suits to show team spirit, kids! Rah rah rah!
I’m still voting “no” this November. Meanwhile, I’ll enjoy watching competition that involves actual skill.
