Sabbatical 1998 - Day 1

water puddle11AM - The Plan™ for today is to hold a block party in my neighborhood. Some people on our street gathered enough signatures to petition the city to have our street closed for 12 hours so that we can party without being run down.

Unfortunately the weather isn't cooperating at all.  The rain will certainly put a damper on the fireworks show scheduled for this evening. On a positive note, we can be assured that the houses will burn slower if they're wet.

not an air cannonLater that day - The street was blocked off, the weather improved and we were ready to paaaaaarty.  Plenty of food, drink and good friends... well, at least until next fall when we place our political yard signs out and learn to loath one another all over again.  Just like Bob from Sesame Street sings, "Who are the people in your neighborhood?..."

One of the main attractions has not been an air cannon.   See, none of us would be in possession of an air cannon (that shoots water balloons scores of feet down range) because possession of such a thing would be dangerous and probably a violation of several city ordinances.  But... if we did have an air cannon, it would be a lot of fun until someone filled it to over 100 psi and it exploded, throwing PVC debris for half a block.  So... it's a real good thing that we didn't have an air cannon.

It's okay to play in the street, kids!Lots and lots of fun was had by all and we partied 'till we puked... okay, well I think one of the kids got sick, but that was likely due to too much candy consumption.

Everyone behaved in a civilized manner and no unnatural deaths were allowed to be reported.  Certain unauthorized incendiary devices went almost completely unnoticed -- certainly not noticed by any law enforcement officers.

All I can say is that it was a darned good thing that no one brought an air cannon.
